PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds may be one of the most dominant multiplayer releases of the past few years, but its shortcomings have come to eclipse the title’s once-sterling reputation. While the community circa March 2017 was optimistic and largely agreed that the game had quite a lot of potential, things seem on the verge of unraveling just two years later. When news came in late September last year that developer Bluehole would be axing the option to switch regions and gating certain players’ access to servers depending on ping, PUBG fans rejoiced. The PUBG MOBILE dev team takes a careful look at the opportunity presented by the partnership to determine what they’d like to see reflected in the game. We felt it would be fun to create unique fashions based on Godzilla as well as including huge footprints and sightings of the giant monster in the water off the coast of Ehrangel. For The Walking Dead , it was obvious that we needed to bring in the four most iconic characters from the show and give them a new battleground in PUBG MOBILE. And we couldn’t bring in Michonne without her katana, Daryl without his bike, Rick without his hat or Negan without Luci
What’s also a letdown is PUBG’s development focus that has seen a slow rollout of content and essential fixes, consistently poor optimization, and an aggressive focus on unwelcome microtransactions for cosmetics, and worse, loot boxes. Within the game, you’ll notice what may be the worst texture pop-in you’ve seen on the PlayStation 4, severe frame rate drops and the clunkiest shooting and looting mechanics. We are excited beyond words that we can finally share the name of our new desert map and tell you a little bit about some of the places you can visit. When we decided to create a new map, we focused on creating an environment that is very different from Erangel. We wanted to go the opposite direction of having lush fields and forests and arrived at the harsh and unforgiving desert of what we can now reveal is Miramar. The unique terrain and dense urban areas of Miramar will create a new Battle Royale experience where the old strategies may no longer work and new tactics are required. We don’t want to tell you too much as you will soon be able to experience it all yourself but we did write a few short descriptions of several of the key landmarks and towns. There’s fun to be had as a social experience, and PUBG is certainly better than the sum of its many subpar parts, but the resources earned through the record-breaking success of PUBG have not translated into a game that holds up in the current climate of high-end shooters, and we can only hope that if major updates (or a sequel of sorts) are on the way, that PUBG’s success supports a triple-A experience instead of a frustrating one that looks and feels dated.
